Guardians of the Galaxy is not my favorite Marvel movie — but it’s certainly ONE of my favorites. Tonally, it’s right up my ally: a punk rock, incredibly offbeat space adventure is picture in the dictionary right next to “my jam,” and so even if the film itself isn’t the end all be all of Marvel movies, I could pretty much live in its world forever. Which, yes, has made the two years since the first came out quite trying. Thankfully a sequel has been on the docket since before the first one saw the light of day, so I could live in peace knowing that more Guardians was indeed on the way. And today, we finally got our first look at the return of the galaxy’s team of a-holes.

Now this is an interesting trailer, for a couple of reasons. First of all, it’s one of those trailers that seems really afraid to call itself a trailer, instead going with the whole “sneak peek” thing. I don’t know why this happens sometimes but, let’s be real here, this is a trailer, and I’m going to judge it based on those parameters.

And yeah, overall, it’s a pretty good teaser. I’m excited to see pretty much anything from this movie so I’m a little bit in the bag on it already, but there was some really cool shots and character moments here. The clear highlight was the scene between Drax and Quill, proving just how brilliantly Gunn and his cast brought this ensemble to life. Their chemistry is grand, and to be reminded of that is one of the trailer’s real joys.

That said, I wouldn’t call this a perfect teaser. Probably my biggest complaint, honestly, is how lazy it sort of is. I see the reasoning for using “Hooked on a Feeling” again after it made such a splash with the teaser for the first film, but c’mon — would it have killed them to use a different song? Mixed with certain shots (such as Gamora flipping in the air, Quill piloting a spaceship, etc.) it gave me a sense of deja vu, as though I was watching a trailer for the first film again or, even worse, a fan made affair.

But once again, “sneak peek,” — I can only hope that things will get a little bolder and a little more creative next time around. That sense of fun with the marketing was a large part of what made the first one such a success, so I have to think Marvel will mix things up in the future. After all, this is Vol. 2 — I don’t want a trailer that just feels like “Greatest Hits.” But even then, at this point in the game, Greatest Hits is enough to get me excited. So if that’s all the trailer was trying to do (and let’s be honest, it really was), it certainly did its job.

But what felt fresh AND made me excited was the film’s first poster, which is actually kind of awesome. Some rough Photoshop aside (a Marvel poster mainstay), this thing is really cool and instantly stands out. Here it is in full below.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Trailer

So we got we great poster, and one good trailer. At this point, I’ll take it.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2017.
